2011 PRELIMINARY LOCAL ELECTION RESULTS

COWICHAN VALLEY REGIONAL DISTRICT

In the Cowichan Valley Regional District, the former chair, Gerry Giles, retains her seat in Cobble Hill.

She beat out rival Dara Quast, 903 to 468.

But Quast won a different victory in Saturday's vote.

In the referendum asking voters whether they think the Eco Depot should go up on Cameron Taggert Rd., more than half the votes cast said 'no'. It's a location Quast has been opposed to, so much so she represents a group who filed a case in court. She said the CVRD has no legal right to put the proposed recycling and waste management depot in that location.

Gilles has said the board will respect the wishes of the people if they vote 'no' to the location.

The incumbent candidate for Area B, Shawnigan Lake, suffered a big loss. Ken Cossey got 379 votes, a far cry from Bruce Fraser who won the riding with over 1,000 votes.
